UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor is an upcoming mixed martial arts event promoted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will be held on November 12, 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Conor McGregor is already the highest paid fighter in the UFC but his worth might multiply exponentially with a win at UFC 205 on Saturday night

Only one UFC fight has ever been held in New York — that was UFC 7 in Buffalo on Sept. 8, 1995 — and mixed martial arts

He's definitely no longer as ferocious as "Pitbull," but Thiago Alves is OK with that. The former welterweight title contender has turned

He was, he said over and over, the best lightweight fighter in the world. He had a résumé to prove it, with wins over the likes of Michael Chandler and Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri and Patricky Freire and Roger Huerta and so many others.

Alvarez was always a man’s man, a fighter’s fighter, who came in shape, respected his opponent and his sport and did his best to make an exciting fight. UFC 205 Live

Circumstances frequently conspired against him, though, and he didn’t get the recognition or the financial gain that comes with it.

He wasn’t on the world’s biggest stage. He didn’t have anyone like Dana White shouting his praises to the media, hyping him and his bouts, and except for a small group of hardcore MMA fans who knew better, he was largely ignored.

“To be honest with you, the biggest obstacle I faced for most of my career is that I wasn’t with the UFC,” he said. “There’s an assumption that fans have that if you don’t fight in the UFC, you’re not of value. When I joined the UFC, it was important for me to change the perspective of the fans.

“It was important for me to let them know that no matter where you’re from, no matter who you’re fighting for, champions come from all parts of the world and a lot of them are unknown. I was one of those guys.”

He now holds the most prestigious lightweight belt in the world, and as UFC champion, will make his first title defense on what is being billed as the biggest card in UFC history.

He’ll face featherweight champion Conor McGregor, the sport’s biggest attraction, in the main event of UFC 205 Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

And yet, Alvarez in some ways is still fighting for respect. At the kickoff news conference for the card in September, a huge roar erupted from the packed crowd as a curtain went up to display the fighters who were appearing on the main card.

It was a wild, raucous event and no one received more praise, adulation and attention than McGregor. The majority of the questions from fans and media were either to McGregor or about him.

Alvarez sat largely ignored, except for when McGregor mocked him. He was shown so little respect that when White, the UFC’s president and master of ceremonies for the news conference, allowed fans to ask questions, one McGregor supporter got up to ask a question but instead insulted Alvarez and finished a speech by giving Alvarez the finger.

“Look, that’s nothing more than a testament to his fan base,” Alvarez said of the incident. “That’s the sort of people who follow [McGregor]. Whatever that guy said, it wasn’t even true. I think he spit out facts that weren’t even facts. The fans he has are fans who only like the [expletive] talk and the stunts and all that.

“I have real fans who understand fighting and who know the sport. They’re the people I want. I don’t need fans who don’t understand fighting but just want to hear guys talk.”

Alvarez tried to sign with the UFC in 2012 after his contract with Bellator expired, but the then-Bellator management insisted it had matched the UFC’s offer. Alvarez contended it did not and it wound up in court.

He was being squeezed financially and had no way to make a living. He finally succumbed and was forced to return to fight for the group that had been battling him in court.

He fought once more for Bellator, defeating Chandler. When Scott Coker was named the new Bellator president in 2014, he allowed Alvarez out of his contract.

He quickly signed with the UFC and faced Donald Cerrone. He lost a close fight, then came back with wins over Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis and won the title by knocking out Rafael dos Anjos in July.
